Are You Making Progress or Just Wasting Your Time?

You're doing the workouts. You're trying to eat better. But the changes are so small, you're starting to wonder if any of it is actually working.

That question is more common after 40 than most people admit out loud: am I making progress, or am I just wasting my time?

The Truth About Why Progress Feels Invisible

Here's what almost nobody tells you: progress doesn't move at one speed, and it doesn't always show up where you're looking for it.

Some changes show up quickly. You may add a rep, use a little more weight, walk a little farther, or notice you recover faster within just a few weeks. These are real, measurable, and fast.

Some changes need more time. Visible changes in body composition tend to be slower, and they're genuinely hard to notice when you're looking at yourself in the mirror every single day. The person who sees you once a month will often notice a difference before you do.

And some progress doesn't show up where you're watching at all. Better energy. Improved movement. Stronger habits. Clothes fitting differently. Doing something that used to feel difficult without thinking twice about it. All of that is evidence the work is doing something, even when the one number you're fixated on hasn't budged.

The mistake isn't lack of effort. It's deciding a Journey isn't working because a single measurement hasn't changed fast enough to satisfy an unrealistic timeline.

Slow Progress Isn't the Same as No Progress

But you need enough evidence to actually know the difference, and that means expanding what counts as evidence in the first place.

Track what you're trying to change. If fat loss is the objective, use more than daily scale weight. Look at longer-term trends and additional measurements, not a single morning's number.

Track what your body can do. Strength, reps, walking capacity, recovery, everyday capability, these can reveal real change well before the mirror does.

Review over enough time to see a trend. One workout, one weigh-in, or one bad week isn't a verdict on your Journey. A single data point was never supposed to tell the whole story.

Progress Shouldn't Require Blind Faith

You shouldn't have to simply hope something is working. You should be able to see evidence that what you're doing is actually moving you somewhere, even when that evidence isn't the one number you've been trained to watch.

Your body changed. Your approach to measuring it should too.

What's the first sign that tells you your fitness is actually improving? For some it's the scale. For others, it's the stairs that stopped feeling hard, or the energy that shows up by 3pm instead of disappearing. [Explore The Fit Velocity's approach to fitness after 40.]

About the Author

Alfonso Hammond is a 30-year fitness industry veteran, founder of The Fit Velocity, and a firm believer that lasting fitness is built on purpose, accountability, and relationships, not shortcuts. He created The Fit Velocity because he saw too many men and women over 40 following programs that were never designed for the lives they actually live. They didn't need another workout. They needed a Journey worth staying on. His philosophy is simple: People don't start from nothing. They start from everything they already are. Whether working with competitive athletes or someone taking their first walk in years, Alfonso's approach remains the same: strengthen the person, strengthen the Journey, and the results will follow.

Every article, guide, and resource published through The Fit Velocity is built upon the same principles found throughout the TFV Testament, practical, honest, and grounded in the belief that meaningful progress comes from reclaiming who you are, strengthening the person you are building, and continuing to thrive throughout life.
